Spain has one of the worst records in valuing the lives of Animals. It is a cultural issue that runs from bull fight, and treatment of farm animals to this sad story on sadistic killings of dogs including ropes around the neck of a dog standing on his hind legs (dieing when he is too tired to stand), injecting bleach into the blood stream, and more "traditional" throws into wells.

There is a charity called Greyhounds in need that help rescue spanish greyhounds ( Galgos ) they rescue them from their "owners" or pick them up from the streets, often in a poor state. They are taken back to kennels where they are nursed back to health and then distributed throughout europe to eager adoptees like myself. I have two of these beautiful creatures. One is very self confident and can cope with any situation, the other, however, does have "issues". We can only assume this, but we think he was left to fend for himself on the streets of spain for a couple of years before being rescued. He is frightened of strange men, pushchairs, squeaking doors and sudden movements ( even when he's at home ) He's badly scarred on his legs and one person even suggested that he'd been shot. He is coming along and getting a little braver in the places that he knows.

Dear Gemma thank you for your comments. I take your strong words against "the people doing this" are an expression of real out-rage. Yes it is saddening. I'd say proper legislation and protection of animals and a radical rethought on the meaning of life of sentient creatures (animals that have feelings / suffer pain).

Dear commentators. Thank you for your comments and reactions on this story. When I first read on this I was likewise angry. I think we can not ennd this cruelty by sheer anger or revenge, but must be stronger than that. We can only win through strong arguments and education. Most of the time the people who conduct such killings or support it, are at the bottom of their society. It will need example and positive campaign to demonstrate the value of what is to them an animal that disrespected them. Unlike other members of human society, to the dog the men can do as they please. This might sound confusing, but what I am saying we must challange by leading example! Secondly we should all support teh appropriate anmal welfare caharities, and thirdly not be afraind to challange behaviours or stand up for your opinion. I am always standing up for being a vegan in France and Spain, and sometimes it is received hostile...

I understand your hate for these people and your true wish something bad may come over them. I think we must be the ones that up hold the moral high ground. This includes penalties in line with our sense of justice. I think that some amount of imprisonment linked up with long community service, an order that disallows these persons to hold or care for animals, and anti-violence education. We can not exclude the possibility of cognition and change, and sometimes even the ability to of even people like that to join the cause for animal welfare. There is never any more powerful voice against animal abusers of this kind than a genuine former insider. We must be able to convince with non violent means, and with good arguments and not go down their route!

This made me sob, one of my dogs came up to me (he does this when we cry) to comfort me and i sobbed more.

- Force-feeding cows for milk and beef
- Hunting
- Trapping
- Biological and Chemical Warfare
What about these? These are just as cruel, but I'm willing to bet that most of you really enjoy those burgers from the force-fed cows, or enjoy hunting/trapping, which either kills the animal outright or tortures them by, most often, breaking their leg and restraining them until the trapper comes back to check the traps. And what about warfare? That is, when you think about it, hunting for other people. The first step, in my mind, for respect of animals os respect for each other.

I am Spanish and I grew up in a rural area (where this kind of thing takes place most frequently), and I have to say that all this is true. I've seen it all to many times. A lot of people here are cruel, heartless beasts to whom an animal's life is worth nothing. They use animals for their personal enjoyment and sports (yes, they call ''haunting'' a sport), be it dogs, horses, bulls, and so on. Things such as passing by a hoard of sheep and throwing a huge stone at one of the sheep's head to kill it for entertainment, or hanging a dog like the one in the first photo, so that he dies with extreme suffering, or even killing a whole litter of kittens by throwing them against a brick wall just because the family doesn't want any more pets, are NOT uncommon. It's disturbing the ammount of cruelty that's culturally permitted, even if the laws these days prohibit this kind of behaviour.
Hunters develop the galgo's haunting instincts to turn them into vicious dogs, and although they don't usually attack people, smaller dogs and cats become game to them. My family used to have a small stray dog who got killed by a gang of galgos, and they're not to blame. It's they're unineuronal owners who should be punished.
Besides, when the galgos are somewhat old (3-4 years?) and/or replaced by younger, healthier dogs, fat chance they will die on the rope, because shooting them means throwing away a bullet.
Just for the sake of sharing; The other day while I was on the bus, I saw a hunter hanging a galgo on an olive tree by the road. I could not get out of the bus, so I lost all chances of filming and/or photographing him, I can hold absolutely nothing against him, even though I SAW HIM, even though I know where he lives and I know he has dogs living in very poor conditions while he drives a nice car. It's so unfair, but there's nothing we can do without proof. It's unbelieavable how dehumanized and sadistic this people are, and not just while dealing with animals.
All I can say is... adopt a galgo, you have no idea what good pets they make, what noble dogs they are, and what poor treatment they recieve in exchange.
A homeless dog bite me a few weeks ago. I did not provoke it. I was just crossing a parking lot when it surprised me from behind. I would like to see it hanged like that. Soon...
