SAVE ISLINGTON ANTIQUE MARKET!

Six hundred customers have signed a petition, which was delivered to Islington Town Hall, against plans to eject up to 40 independent businesses from the Mall, part of Camden Passage market in Islington.

Now it has emerged that the traders have been given notice to quit by July.

London & Associated Properties the owner of the property housing the antiques market in Islington, just off Angel bus and tube station have decided to evict all antique market traders and businesses and made a planning application to raise the floor so that it could attract greater investors such as a department store. Local residents and shoppers, the Lib-Dem leader of Islington council and Labour councillor all oppose those plans. But the developer aims to still go ahead.

Traders have complaint that over the last few years owners in the area have tried to use rent politics to try and get people out of their shop units with rents as as high as £30.000.

Some traders have been there for up to 20 years and the antique market which flourishes over during weekends has been a highlight of this part of Islington, with some traders expecting customers from far away.

I have spoken to some traders today and they say that if they get shut down there is almost nowhere left for antiques in London, given that a similar development happened at Kings Road in Chelsea. One owner said he did not know what to do once he gets shot (original spelling mistake eh shut) down. Possibly stop it all he uttered. I was also told that at the moment owners fear intimidation from the owners, and that public complaints could lead to instant eviction as punishment.



A petition with 600 customers has been handed down to Islington Town Hall but a wider petition is still to be organized. The shop keepers are asking people to write to Islington's Planning Department to oppose these awful plans
